Tumbleweed Transitional Learning Center

MCRSD is continuously researching and implementing innovative approaches to educating students. With the many talents, skills <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--> and needs that our students have, it is necessary for our District to think outside the box in order to offer a quality and challenging educational product to them. You will find this type of philosophy woven throughout the MCRSD curriculum, programs, activities and services that we offer our students and their families.

The Tumbleweed Transitional Learning Center was established September 30, 2002.  The primary focus is to offer educational and vocational services to the youth who are enrolled in any Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development (TCYD) program.  A number of students continue to attend the Learning Center after leaving a TCYD program, including several Detention Alternative Program (DAP) clients.  Students have also brought their friends to classes, who had dropped out of school, and many of them have also enrolled.  Tumbleweed Transitional Learning Center is located in Central Phoenix at 11th Avenue and Indian School Road, and is accessible to a high-need community nearby and through transportation.  A satellite site, Esperanza, is located at 6436 East Sweetwater Avenue in Scottsdale.  The Learning Center houses tutoring services for monolingual students, GED preparation, Workforce Investment Act programs, and three homeless intervention and prevention programs, as well as a high school, the Tumbleweed Transitional Learning Center, under the auspices of the Maricopa County Regional School District (MCRSD) No. 509.  MCRSD has the ability to oversee the completion of 8th grade promotion requirements, as well as high school credits and graduation.

The educational mission of the Tumbleweed Regional Learning Center is to provide a safe learning environment that empowers students to become academically and professionally competitive, and to develop self-esteem, citizenship and high ethical standards.  Our goals are to increase student achievement, which is measured by pre-tests and post-tests, and to offer students an educational environment that is standards based and planned individually for each student.  The focus is to meet a variety of student services for family members, case management services, and a host of other supportive services that promote self-sufficiency.
